Professional Values and Ethics
What are professional values and ethics? Values is defined as the relative worth merit or importance meaning of the estimated equivalent quantity or magnitude on which something is measured, appreciated or wanted. Ethics refers to the rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular group or culture; moral principles of an individual. These two moral values are keys to success now and in the future.
There are many sources that can lead you to great career success. Living with integrity is being honest with yourself and compassionate with others. Taking on responsibilities an earning the respect for yourself and from others can lead to many accomplishments. Integrity has a positive effect whether you achieve it academically or in your field of career. Establishing a personal mission plays a huge part in who you want to be, what you want to do, and what principles you want to live by.
Success is a process. Sometimes success is not acknowledged until you reach your goal but just by moving ahead is success. Appreciating yourself and what you have accomplished whether big or small should motivate you to work even harder and set new goals. According to Keys to Lifelong Learning Telecourse (2000) “One of Thomas Jefferson’s rules for success was to do the worst thing first. Go after the things you are afraid to do, that you don’t like to do, that you’d rather not do. Do them first thing in the morning, if you can. You’ll boost your -self image for the rest of the day, and you’ll have a lot more pleasure from that point on.” The confidence you gain when you work hard can motivate you to succeed again.
Failure is as important as success and is one of your greatest teachers. Mistakes are a natural part of your life journey. How you respond and learn from failure will have great impact on your life. When we hit rock bottom, but decide to pick up ourselves up with greater strength and desire to reach our goals, we will only look back to glorify what failure taught us and now we learn much more. People who learn to manage failure have the courage to take risks and learn from mistakes. Often people need to learn how to take criticism and know how to fail before achieving success.
As you continue or seek your career, ethics and values are very important and is the basis to an organization, and if followed in the right ways, a successful career will be recognized. There are a few factors to achieve a successful career. In order to accomplish success in life, you have to believe in yourself and have faith that reaching your goals is a priority to establish your profession. Career-success-for-newbies (2006) stated, Once your mind is convinced that you can do it, nothing is impossible. Another factor is putting those beliefs into action. Focusing on what you really want and actually doing it is a big progress in your path to a successful career. An added factor to success is discipline into your actions. Sacrificing time off on other things to act upon your future is a good discipline for your actions. There is nothing that can stop you from accomplishing your goals. Stand tall and take responsibility into your future.
