Incidence: What’s the risk of a child being born with Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome?
Between 85% and 90% of all cases are not inherited. The syndrome is instead caused by a de novo (random) even during early embryonic development.
The remaining percentage is caused genetically through inheritance. If one of the parents has a history of the syndrome, then the rates are much higher.
Prevalence: How many people are affected globally?
Approximately 1 in 50,000 births are affected with Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome. This number is only an estimate. It is believed that the rate may be much higher due to misdiagnosis and undiagnosed cases.
Approximately twice as many females are affected than males.
