In Wolf Whistle by Lewis Nordan, the characters of Money, Mississippi had difficulty communicating with each other due to the systematic inequality of society during the 1950’s. The character’s in the story had trouble understanding one another and were not able to communicate efficiently or have good relationships with others because of their differences. When the news reporters came for the trial of Bobo’s death, they made fun of the people in the community, because they thought everything the people said or did was funny because they were not used to their style of communication. Throughout the book, there are many scenarios of communication issues between characters in the same community and outsiders. The characters’ communication barriers were a problem of inequality of gender and the race or socioeconomic class of an individual. The differences of gender were an issue for communication especially for the women who were often belittled. These female characters were not generally viewed by males as equals in society, making it difficult for their opinions to be heard or taken seriously. Lewis Nordan tries to bridge the gaps in communication by using children to represent mistakes in the community and to ask difficult questions. I believe he does this to show how communication caused two children to die, Bobo and Glenn Gregg, and the use of students in Alice’s class to ask difficult questions in hopes for change in the future. I believe if the characters had been able to communicate effectively and without discrimination of gender, race, or socioeconomic class neither Bobo nor Glenn Gregg would have died. This novel shows how communication can be destructive if changes are not made to improve
