Feminism, and the struggle for equality and civil rights has been a dispute that has been unceasingly fought all around the world. Women in the United States have continued to acquire rights, and close the barrier amongst the sexes. Different waves of feminism have protested for diverse issues for women, and although today we still have not yet closed the barrier between men and women, we have come a long way in our fight. That is not to be said for all women around the world however. Arab women are opposing inequality and engaging themselves in a similar fight women around the world are, yet their voices are disregarded. Arab women are tyrannized by a patriarchal society, and the lack of support and media coverage only make the struggle harsher for these women to achieve equivalent rights as opposed to their male counterparts. …show more content…
More often than not we tend to turn a blind eye to the fight Middle Eastern women are pursuing, simply because we are ignorant in the actuality of the lives of these women. We accept what the media portrays to us, regardless of its accuracy. The belief tends to be that these women are not pursuing the same goals as we are. American women view Arab women as feeble individuals who conform to society and comply with their husbands. We do not associate this with the fight to gain full equality. Educating ourselves in the culture of other people will allow us to aid women universally, in gaining civil rights. Discussing Arab feminism and comparing it to American feminism will allow us to better understand the similarities and dissimilarities between each feminist movement, allowing us to view how women’s liberation movements have advanced throughout
