The topic to be discussed in the paper is the subordinate role of women portrayed on American media during the 1950s and 1960s. Due to the impacts of the Second World War and the Cold War, having a happy and safe family became the ideology of the mainstream and the stereotype of a housewife with sole responsibility for cooking, cleaning and taking care of child and other family members was created. The paper will introduce four different stereotypes underlying the women portrayed in American media during the 1950s and 1960s based on the study of The Ideal Woman by Holt in 2014.
