Women are more likely to be raped and abused than men are. According to the Department of defense, there are thousands of unwanted sexual contacts in the military every year and not all of them get reported (Military Sexual Violence). Rape occurs in the military because of proximity. Something is bound to happen when you put a male and female together for a long time. This close proximity plays a major role in losing unit cohesion. Putting men and women together in combat is not a great idea. In the United States everyone is equal, therefore, women should be able to do things men are capable of. Barbara Wilson, a retired Air Force Captain said, “History has shown women can perform well and that given the right training and environment they can work together” (Women in the Military). Proponents argue that physical attributes are not important, but integrity and determination are. Integrity and determination are the most important and these qualities have nothing to do with gender.
