The object chosen here for analysis is the Nike Women's Novelty Knit dress from the summer 2014 collection.
To start with, the object appears to be a simple yet sophisticated and outstanding dress amongst the majority of modern tennis clothes. The top of the dress and the skirt are paired with an elastic belt accentuating the waist. The top is close-fitting and has a deep cut back and V-neck, which ease the movements and make the garment very feminine at the same time. Doubtless, over the years people have become more brave and experimental in the way of dressing. The same situation is with sports outfits and especially tennis wear ( ). Let us try to trace the beginning of tennis apparel, and how they have changed through the years. Women used to 'fight' on the court wearing lace-up corsets, long skirts, ladylike slippers and sometimes even a well-placed fur. Today a minimal body coverage is acceptable, and there are almost no limits when it comes to what to wear on the court as long as the outfit is made of appropriate materials. Back in 1910s' 'sport for women was a dressing-up game.' (Charlie Lee-Potter, 1984). Indeed, during the first years of this century the only wish the woman had was to emulate men in their sports dress. The casual tennis outfit involved rubber slipover skirts with elastic cuffs, and even brilliantine to keep the hair in place. Competitiveness was not encouraged at that time, so women did not care much about physical comfort, which would allow them to win.
