Good morning, my fellow Americans!
Now, I know what you’re thinking. I am not our President you all expected to hear when you turned on your radio. However, I am someone who believes the same as he. Hello, I’m Kate O’Brien, a very experienced American journalist who was formally asked by Roosevelt himself to do this fireside chat. Anthony, an advocate and dominant figure of the Women’s Suffrage Movement, along with others, founded the National Women Suffrage Association. To achieve their goals, suffragist leaders attempted to convince state legislatures to grant women their right to vote. This first part of their strategy worked, for Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and Idaho all listened. Women did not stop there, for they next took part in court cases to test the Fourteenth Amendment. They declared that women were citizens as well as men, and proved that the amendment was fraud. The next year, I remember that Uriah Stephens organized the Noble Order of the Knights and Labor, which specifically focused on the individual’s well- being. All workers could join, no matter what type of laborer they were, their race or gender. They encouraged that men and women have an equal pay. By 1886, the Knights had influenced more labor unions to form. Craft unionism was thus generated, including skilled workers from one or more jobs. A man named Samuel Gompers was the leader of the American Federation of Labor, which focused on negotiating pay, conditions and hours of the workers. They decided to use strikes as their tactic to win higher wages and shorter work hours. As a result, their pay increased by about $5, and their workweek fell almost 6! Some leaders believed that unions should include both skilled and unskilled workers, such as Eugene V. Debs, who founded the American Railway Union. In 1894, they won a strike for higher wages, impelling even more unions to organize. I wanted to enlighten you on this topic because I believe it is important that you know how adamant
