In the 1900’s the doctors were able to determine what was wrong with these individuals and thus the word retard became a medical term. However people did not use the word only as a medical term but as an insult or slang for those who didn’t seem all there. This new meaning became very popular in the 1900’s and earl 2000’s.
Today ‘retard’ is used to offend. It is used to replace the word idiot or stupid. The word is powerful and because of that people think it would be a nice sharp tool to use against others. The word that was first meant as a verb evolved to be a noun used to cause pain. It is said that we laugh to release tension. Things that make us uncomfortable we make fun of. In this case, being unable to do something makes us a retard. Or so we think. We tend to believe that if we cannot do something we must be disabled, there must be something wrong with us. We forget that we are not perfect, and thus there must be a reason as to why we are inept. Is it because we are intellectually inept or socially inept? We rely on our words and not our actions.
