There were many themes that were heavily discussed throughout the semester in Modern World History. With this being said though, the major theme would be world advancements. This can be seen through things such as the industrial revolution, scientific revolution, imperialism, French Revolution, and nationalism. All of these topics that this class discussed is a period in time where there were major advancements in technology, science, government and military. These advancements are what has helped shape not only the United States but the entire world.

These two ideologies were the backbone for shaping a nation in a way where the people took pride in their country and worked to expand and strengthen it. Imperialism helped make advancements by colonial expansion through, “economic ideas, ideas of civilization in its highest sense, and the ideas of politics and patriotism” (295). In an economic sense, controlling trade and/or their economic policies can lead to becoming wealthier and with wealth comes power. Imperialism has a main goal of achieving the highest amount of power and expansion possible. Civilization can be when a nation or country reaches its most advanced stage of social development, which is what every nation strives to accomplish in order to be the most advanced and wealthiest. Also, if a country Is strong in politics and patriotism they have a much better chance of striving and becoming a more powerful force in the world. Nationalism is key to creating a strong military force. This is because if citizens have pride in their nation, they will be much more willing to fight for it. “Europeans saw the war as a glorious-an opportunity to fight for the flag or the kaiser or the king; to wear splendid uniforms; and to win glory in battles decided by elan, spirit, and bravery” (379). This quote goes to show that men in Europe during a time that nationalism was strong, showed bravery and had an urge to fight for the country they
