A wound is a break or open cut to the skin. Most wounds go through a similar healing process. There are three phases in wound healing; inflammation, proliferation and regeneration, and maturation. In the first phase, inflammation, homeostasis begins. The blood vessels stop blood flow and platelets from a clot to stop the wound from bleeding. After the blood has clotted and bleeding has stopped or slowed, the blood vessels open back up and allow white blood cells and antibodies in the affected area. This helps prevent infection of the wound. After the white blood cells and other beneficial elements enter the area is usually when someone would notice the pain and swelling of the affected area. The second phase is regeneration and proliferation, …show more content…
This may also lead to scar formation. The connective tissue formed would be dense fibrous. The dense fibrous tissue is packed with fibers and composes the dermis, where the wound most likely occurred. Proliferation deals with several cell types; the injured tissues, new cells, and the fibrous connective tissue. the process results in an increase of the number of cells, and is the balance between cell divisions and cell loss through cell death (differentiation). The final phase in tissue repair is maturation. Maturation of tissue is the remodeling and reorganization of the connective tissue. The amount of the fibrous connective tissue increases in granulation tissue. This will eventually develop into a scar, which may remodel over time. The location and extent of the injury will determine the time this process takes overall. Healing minor wounds (wounds that only involve the epithelial layer) consists of all of the three phases discussed above, inflammation, proliferation and maturation. These types of wounds can take 3-5 days to heal, and can continue to have collagen accumulation into the second
