Well, without the wild animals, the crew would have starved to death. As for the domestic animals, they were a key factor in keeping up the morale of the men. The dogs for example kept the men busy caring for them. Lots of the men became so attached to their dogs that they began to make them ‘dogloos’. Dogloos were basically an igloo made for the dogs out of snow, ice and seal skin to shelter them from the cold. “The men were becoming very attached to their dogs, making straw mattresses for the dogloos, saving special treats for their favorites, and even crawling into the dogloos on occasion to share the dogs’ warmth.” (pg 37) How did these animals benefit them though? The domestic animals kept up morale, helped them to transport things and provided entertainment for the men. “The hunters brought the big seals back to the ship on dogsleds” (28) Without question we know it would be near impossible for the men to bring back those big heavy seals, not to mention how physically draining it would be. They needed the dogs. Truthfully, Mrs. Chippy was pretty much useless. Aside from entertaining the men with his foolish ways. When it comes to the benefits of wild animals, it’s pretty simple. According to the plan, Endurance expedition was not supposed to get stuck in the ice, or have any delays. If it had gone to plan they would not have needed any extra food, but since it was delayed by many months they would have starved to death without the wild animals on this trip. “Now that the trip was delayed by a minimum of several months, the ships stores’ had to be supplemented with fresh meat.” (26) They killed many seals and penguins in this time. There is no doubt in my mind that these animals were important to the survival of the men on the Endurance
