The first recollection I had of the war was on July the 28th, 1914. I was sitting on my porch in Ballaraat on a fine morning reading the newspaper when I saw that Austro-Hungary had declared war on Serbia because Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian terrorist group, the Black Hand. At the time I thought nothing of it. Small European wars like this happen all the time. Little did I know, this would be the start of The Great War. After Austro-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Russia declared war on Austro-Hungary to help Serbia out. On August the 1st Germany backed Austro-Hungary by declaring war on Russia. On August the 3rd France and Germany declared war on each other. On August the 4th Germany crossed through Belgium, even though Belgium did not allow them to. I had heard things about Egypt and its pyramids, quite spectacular apparently. I was kind of excited to go to Egypt but at the same time I was disappointed that I did not get to go to the Mother Country, England. Unfortunately I think the conditions are going to be very hard in Egypt.
Once we started to get close to Egypt I remember seeing land for the first time since we left Adelaide. The seas got rougher and the sun got hotter the closer we got. This was the first experience I had of seasickness.
We arrived in Egypt on December the 15th. When we arrived in Egypt the only thing I remember was the amazing sight of the pyramids. It was spectacular. Even though I would have liked to take the moment in, we had strict orders from the captain to unload the boat in time. After we unloaded the boat we were shown around by an official.
