The People of the Sun or should I say, the Yavapai people, are called people of the Sun cause when their tribe came into existence they called themselves that and Sakarakaamche named them after his Grandfather. Currently, the tribe covers a small range of land and are separated into three reservations sharing two of them with the Apache. In those small pieces of land, the people still follow the way their ancestors did, even if some of the rituals have changed. One thing that has not changed, but may come to a few versions, is the Yavapai’s origin story with two women and Am-ju-ku-poo-ka’s son who made mankind. Wickiups are small and round or cone-shape made by a willow frame which is covered in bush and dirt. These type of homes allowed the Yavapai people to move around more freely with nothing to help them carry their homes but themselves. The language of the Yavapai today is English but in the past, they spoke the tongue of Yavapai. The people of the Sun traded often with tribes from the Southwest and enjoyed trading their deerskins for furs of corn. The Yavapai were mostly allies with the Apache and the Mojave tribes but they still fought wars with many of their neighbors which sometimes included their allies. Most of the wars were normally with the Havasupai and the Papago tribes who were obviously common enemies. When fighting these wars the men had many weapons. Some of them are bows and arrows, throwing sticks, snares, club spears and leather shields if you were the lucky few. On the more peaceful end of a Yavapai cooked. Their two main crops that they grew were corn and beans. The two foods they make with these crops are cornbread and when they find acorns, the Yavapai make acorn stew. The Yavapais also did arts and crafts, their artists were and still are famous for making blankets and pottery
