Sookan changes in many ways throughout the book Year Of Impossible Goodbyes when faced with the following situations: When Grandfather dies, when the Sock Girls are taken away, and when Sookan and Inchun are crossing the border to a North Korea.

The first time Sookan changes in the book is when Grandfather, who is a wise and peaceful old man, perishes. ‘“No doctors for the old dying Korean man”’ (Choi 41). Grandfather dying set off a spark in Sookan’s brain, telling her that there won't always be someone there for her when she needs them, but she need to be there for others.

The second time Sookan changes in the book is when the Sock Girls are taken away by the Japanese Imperial Soldiers shortly after Grandfather dies. ‘Praying for a revelation
