The Young Turk Legacy and Nation Building by Erik J. Zurcher is a well written book. It covers the end of the Ottoman Empire and the beginning of Turkey. The main focus of Zurcher is the Young Turks and how the politics worked in that time frame. His main area of study was the transition of the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey and he focused on the Young Turks. He was well revered in these subjects. He was a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Art and Sciences. Throughout the book, Zurcher showcases his knowledge on the subject. He begins each part of the book with an introduction. These introductions showcase the important points and his main goals for the reader to learn in that chapter. Erik Zurcher explains the effects of the Young Turks and the rise of the new Republic of Turkey. First, Zurcher begins the book by introducing sources. He spends the first fifty-four pages explaining different sources. They range from Ataturk’s speech, memoirs, and other primary and secondary sources. He talks about how he bases the criteria for truthful primary sources. The second part begins with Zurcher covering the lead up to fall of the Ottoman Empire beginning in 1850. He goes through the ideology of the Young Turks and their goals. He explains who they were. Zurcher, also covers the opposition to the Young Turks. Zurcher does well with the explanation of the sides and the challenges that face the Young Turks. Throughout these chapters Zurcher uses mostly primary sources. These are especially helpful because he is examining social history. Social history is better understood, when reading what happened from the point of view of the people, who lived the events.
