Yusef Komunyakaa’s “Facing It” is a very powerful poem that is focused on the memorial of the Vietnam War. The speaker visits this memorial and by being in this place he starts to have flashbacks of the war which ultimately invokes a lot of painful memories for him. The speaker is then reminded that he can try to ignore his emotions but he is going to eventually fall prey to them again. Memorials were created for a way of coping with the grief individuals tend to feel following the death of a loved one.
