The first reason why Louie was unbroken was because he had his loved ones surrounding him at his time of need. After the war, Zamperini was having difficulties trying to adjust to his normal life again. He was having issues such as PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) that comes with experiencing traumatic events such as war. This caused Zamperini to be only the shell of the person he once was.
