Zero Excuses in Mental Training

What does it mean to be a successful swimmer? Is your definition different than the swimmer in another group on your team? Or a swimmer on a different team entirely? I bet. Being a successful athlete doesn’t mean you are the best, or you win all the time, or have the most hardware. The common trait that makes an athlete successful is their commitment to their sport and their will to be the best they can while managing all their responsibilities. It is important to them to attain goals, enjoy what they are doing and achieving, and they believe involvement in their sport is leading them to a better life or a better version of themselves. Understanding these motivations is a foundational piece of mental training.

The athlete is too young, too busy, too inexperienced, too immature, not ready, etc. When is the right time? Mental skills and toughness are developed over the course of time. Will your athletes be spared from facing challenges and struggles because they are too young? Too Busy? Too inexperienced? Too immature? Not ready? I would be confident in saying, with certainty, that those excuses will give way to even more reason for them to experience challenges and struggles. The more athletes learn mental skills at a younger age, the more success they will have throughout their athletic careers and throughout their lifetime. It is a disservice to not coach your athlete(s) in mental training as they will need these skills to achieve whatever definition of success motivates
