Ziziki’s Greek restaurant in Plano, Texas has been voted best Greek restaurant in Dallas by D Magazine for the past 3 years, so I decided to see what all the fuss was about. This location is the second of three but the original chef, George Cruz, moved to this second location. Cruz has been working for 20 years for Ziziki’s and went to culinary school in Hawaii, and then studied Greek cuisine with the owners. The menu changes frequently whenever they get new ingredients. Before I came in to the restaurant I did a little research of my own and discovered the hot items on the menu to be the Greek salad (of course), the leg of lamb gyro and, for dessert, the baklava ice cream cake which I was anxious to sink my teeth into.
I brought seven guests with me to enjoy the late lunch and to see how the staff could handle a bigger table. Upon arrival you first pass through the rustic patio with a wooden overhang. It didn’t take long at all for the piping hot food to come out of the kitchen ready for our taste buds to enjoy. The gyro was made of pure lamb and was perfectly seasoned which brought out the simplicity of the natural flavors. Roasted potatoes sat next to the gyro on the plate. My first bite of the potatoes was unsatisfied when I realized the slight burnt taste. Although four or five were burnt, I calmly ate the rest on the plate, pushing the burnt ones to the side. I felt like the pastichio was missing something that its Italian lasagna counterpart had. It didn’t have any strong flavors and was just an overall ok dish. The Mediterranean salad really stood out with its individual rich flavors of the vegetables and the damn good fresh feta cheese. And yes, that did just come out of my meat loving
