Zoos Argumentative Essay

Regardless of age or gender, everyone loves to go to the zoo and observe the wild animals at just a few feet away. We think zoos should exist because we can learn and observe the animals. We think zoos are an acceptable habitat to the endangered species. We think zoos are helpful in preventing the endangered species from going extinct. We think zoos are keeping animals happy and alive. “Don’t judge a book by their cover” they say. We cannot assume that animals are treated right just by looking at the surface and witnessing their care done by the experienced zoo keepers. Let me illustrate to you their arguments in a few current issues. The most massive ongoing war involving these groups of people is PETA and SeaWorld involving Orcas. Orcas, or killer whales, are the largest of the dolphins and one of the world's most powerful predators. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is the largest animal rights organization dedicated to establishing and defending the rights of all animals. PETA operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment. “In October 2011, PETA filed a lawsuit against SeaWorld seeking a declaration that their Orcas are slaves and subjected to involuntary servitude in violation of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.” PETA claims that SeaWorld enslaves animals in small tanks at marine parks around the country- the parking lot at SeaWorld in San Diego is bigger than the tanks the Orcas live in! The Orcas are also forced to perform unnecessary tricks for “entertainment.” Additionally, the Orcas have collapsed dorsal fins, a sign of an unhealthy orca, to which SeaWorld claims that is common and natural for all orca.
