In the novel “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens the ghosts of christmas past future and present represent the theme being; The rich people are responsible for the well-being of others including the poor. In the novel Ebenezer Scrooge was visited by three ghosts to exhibit his past actions, his present actions, and his actions yet to come and the outcome of those actions. Scrooge learns that he will either have to change his ways or accept the outcome of what is to come, which could result in Tiny Tim’s life coming to an end because he did nothing to help. In this novel Charles Dickens uses the three ghosts to exhibit the theme that the rich are responsible for the well-being of other people in their society. The first ghost Scrooge was visited by was the ghost of christmas past. This ghost was proportioned like a child but looked like an old man. The thing Scrooge thought was weird was that he had a light coming out of his head and Scrooge wanted it to be put out. For example, “But the strangest thing about it was, that from the crown of his head there sprung a bright clear jet of light… but he had a special desire to see the sprit in his cap; and begged him to be covered” (Dickens 18-19). Scrooge did not like the light coming from his head and he asked him to cover it but the ghost would not. This symbolizes the rich being responsible for the well-being of others. Scrooge wants to put out the ghosts light, and the light symbolizes his happiness. He is proportioned like a child because Scrooge always puts out children's lights including his nephew. The second ghost Scrooge was visited by was the ghost of christmas present. This ghost showed him the Cratchits home and what their life was like. Tiny Tim was very sick but despite what the family is going through and being poor they still have their “light” and are still happy. As Scrooge watches the Cratchits in their home being marry and happy he begins to become upset because he wants poor Tiny Tim to be spared but the ghost reminds him of how before he didn't care and that it would be better to decrease the surplus population so why should he care now. For example, “No, no,” said Scrooge, With an intrest he had never felt before, “Tell me if Tiny Tim will live”… Oh no, kind Spirit! say he will be spared.”… What then? If he be like to die than he had better do it, and decrease the surplus population”(Dickens 40). After watching the Cratchits Scrooge begins his change of heart, he now wants Tiny Tim to live when before he could care less. The second ghost really starts to get Scrooge to take a look at the things behind closed doors, and that Scrooge could stop this if he helped out by getting Tiny Tim to see a doctor, This symbolizes how the rich is responsible for the well-being of the poor. The third ghost Scrooge was visited by was the ghost of christmas yet to come. The ghost took him to the Cratchits house when Tiny Tim had passed away and Also to his grave and what people were saying about him. Everyone was rummaging through his things taking them because he had no loved ones to give his things too. The towns people were talking
