Information is data that has been processed so that it has meaning and value to a recipient, whereas data tends to refer to recorded descriptions of things, events, activities and transactions. It could be said that the register database exists at a fairly low level of security. Other systems, such as student achievement information systems and databases that contain medical conditions and history have more stringent security measures in place, e.g. limited user rights, special passwords, etc. Achievement data is usually transferred onto systems that are held by awarding bodies (C&G “Walled Garden”, EDEXCEL “SRF”). These can be accessed by certain administrators who have been given particluar rights by the system administrator and are often single individuals. It could be said that the higher the security implications of systems used, the smaller the number of personnel accessing these systems. Certain systems, such as “eTracker”, which records student reports, achievement data, personal data and causes for concern or compliment can now be accessed by students as read-only users.
