Knowing How to Write
After reading the two articles University students: They can't write, spell or present an argument, and Business schools take aim at bad writing, I understand that why business people tell our faculty that students write poorly. There are two important reasons that why students can not write efficiently: one is poor basic English writing skills and another is ineffective writing.
First reason, students lack skills in grammar and lack of basic ability to express themselves in writing. From the article of University students: They can’t write, spell or present on argument, one of the poet and playwright Michelen Wandor say:“students don’t know what a sentence is, and what are verbs and nouns are. Students struggle with apostrophes and they don’t know what tense they are writing in. ”Moreover, A children’s author Yvonne Coppard also said: “Their syntax and grammar are sloppy, they are sentences that draggle all over the place, you can see whole pages without paragraphs, and as for speech punctuation.” As show from the above example from the article, we could see that students in college are really lack of grammar and structure skills. However, those skills are the basic skill we need in order to communicate with our audience.
Second reason is ineffective writing. Nowadays, the technology is growing so fast, people can commutate in all different ways, such as text-messages, e-mails, Facebook, twitters.
Those are effect students’ writing in hidden way. For example, when students text-message they use a lot of abbreviation word, such as LOL (laugh out loud), KIT(keep in touch), NP(no problem) and so on. However, when they write e-mail to their managers, they also used those abbreviation words. Think about it, if the managers see those words, how would they think about you as a profession. To be a profession, using appropriate words in the writing is important. From the above two reasons, I understand that why business people say that university students cannot write.
In my opinion, the good professional writing should be consisting several points. First, writer should be focus on the reader’s side point of view. The ultimately goal of writing is trying to communicate with audience. If the main point of your writing is fuzzy, how could audience know what you are trying to say. It might cause communicate issues. Second, writer should be concise in the way that try to say what we need to say in fewer words, write at an appropriate conversational level, and organize it in a way that makes sense for the reader. In another word, the writing should be concise and efficient. For example, when writing a professional email, we want to put the main point in the opening sentence. If we have several main points that we need to address, then we should list in the bullet point so that reader can immediately tell what we are trying to say. By doing so, we could make our writing more efficient and concise.
As an international student, I was confident about my writing skills until I came to United States. I have learned that English writing is totally different with Chinese writing. English writing emphasizes on the structure, whiles Chinese writing focus on the meaning. I found out that people tend to put thesis statement in the first paragraph in English writing. However, in Chinese writing people tend to mix the meaning throughout the essay. You could find the main point most often in last paragraph in Chinese writing. Moreover, the passive voice is often used in English expression; in Chinese writing, writers usually use the active voice. The confident in Chinese writing made me write poorly in English, following is about writing experience I had.
