Lesson 1 Short Answer 1. Explain how self-perception impacts your communication decisions. Why is it important to focus on your skills for perceiving others when you are making decisions for step 2 in DECIDE? Include specific examples of the process. • 1. Self-perception is how we believe other people perceive us, which can affect us positively or negatively. By being more aware of how we communicate with people, we can notice signs that the receiver is understanding us through the nonverbal communication they are sending. Before we start to verbally communicate, we have already begun nonverbally communicating to the receiver of our message. Self-perception affects our confidence, attitudes, and behaviors, this is why it is important to focus on our skills when we start making decisions for Step 2 in DECIDE. Understanding how others see us can help us make better communication decisions. Our verbal as well as nonverbal communication needs to align. Effective ways to communicate will be to have the right tone, making eye contact. An example of not focusing on the way others are perceiving you while evaluating the receiver is having an important conversation in a noisy restaurant. While sitting across the table from each other, you are making eye contact but from all the outside noise, the receiver may miss hearing important parts of your conversation that could affect their job, family, or major parts of their lives. Evaluating where you held this conversation, for example at a park or somewhere with less noise, the receiver would start with a more positive first impression of this conversation. 2.
