1. The development of relationships
- Ruby and Nate: Although Ruby perceives Nate as a stereotypical rich person at first glance; she starts to realize that they might have more in common than she thought. For example, as they start to spend more time together, Ruby learns that both of them have divorced parents and that neither of them have a close relationship with their parents. As they start to spend more time together, Ruby and Nate become very close friends.
- Ruby and Cora: When the social services workers discover that Ruby has been living in the yellow house all on her own for two months, she is forced to go live with her sister that she hasn’t seen in ten years. When Ruby was younger, she and Cora had a very close relationship but after Cora left for university, they never saw each other again. For example, Ruby is a very pessimistic person in the beginning of the story because she is unhappy that she has been forced to live with her sister and she thinks that if she always expects the worst, she’ll never be disappointed. But on the other hand, there is her friend Nate who is very optimistic despite the difficulties he must face in his life. As a result of their contradictory personalities, their attitudes and the way they interact with other people are very different. Whenever Ruby meets someone new, she always remains as detached as possible and she often seems unapproachable to people that don’t know her. But because of Nate’s optimism, he is known for his friendly personality and he is very popular at school.
