One of the most influential and famous individual in Buddhism is the Dalai Lama. The reincarnation of the Dalai Lama is a tradition that has been passed down for centuries in order to properly govern Tibet. The Dalai Lama is responsible for governing Tibet because that is where the origin of Tibetan Buddhism resides. In order to further understand the Dalai Lame, we must look past his formal definition and look at his life.
The 14th Dalai lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was born on July 6, 1935 in the small village of Takster, located in the province of Amdo (“Brief Biography”). His original name was Lhamo Dhondup which means “Wishing Fufilling Goddess” and he was born into was a simple farmer family, so they didn’t have much money or land (“Brief Biography”). Takster was a small village that stood on a hill overlooking a valley. Its fields weren’t maintained well because of the violent and unpredictable weather in the area. He had many memories of typical child behaviors such as “observing a group of children fighting and running to join the weaker side” (“Brief Biography”). His other early memories also include going to the chicken den with his mother to pick out eggs for them to eat. He enjoyed staying behind and sitting in the chicken’s nest making clucking noises; however, some memories were different than others and hinted at his destiny for greater things. One of these events was when Gyatso was an infant, he would often pack things up in a bag and say he was going on a long journey. This coupled with the fact that he would always be allowed to sit at the head of the table, normally reserved for the head of the household (Father), indicated that he wasn’t an ordinary child after
