The Declaration of Independence was a document signed by the congressional representatives of the thirteen colonies declaring that the U.S. was free. This document was signed on July 4, 1776. It was proposed to justify the actions of the second continental congress. No importation of slaves after 1808 means you weren't legally allowed to import slaves to the U.S. after 1808. If you had slaves you were able to keep them or make them free. When setting your slaves free you had to give them “Free man papers” but if you forgot your paper and you got caught you were sent back to your previous owner. This law was one of the major reasons we don't have slavery
