Most events leading up to the Civil War were related to slavery, the issues ranged from the wording of the Declaration of independence to counting the enslaved members in the census. In effort to have a balance in congress between slave and free states, The Missouri compromise was passed in 1820. Senator Henry Clay introduced a series of resolutions in an attempt to prevent a crisis between North and South, creating the Compromise of 1850. Henry Clay argued and took part in both the 1820 and 1850 compromises. Later on in the years, the Kansas- Nebraska act was proposed in 1854 due to anti slavery supporters being outraged under the terms of the missouri compromise of 1820

The Declaration of Independence was a document signed by the congressional representatives of the thirteen colonies declaring that the U.S. was free. This document was signed on July 4, 1776. It was proposed to justify the actions of the second continental congress. This document had three purposes: A theory of government, a declaration of war, and a list of complaints.The words to be quoted from the Declaration originally started off as “Life, Liberty, and Property” which was later changed to “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” This change was caused because as teens would say “Slaves are just so not a person’s property!”

No importation of slaves after 1808 means you weren't legally allowed to import slaves to the U.S. after 1808. If you had slaves you were able to keep them or make them free. When setting your slaves free you had to give them “Free man papers” but if you forgot your paper and you got caught you were sent back to your previous owner. This law was one of the major reasons we don't have slavery
