The programme or the intervention will start by identifying adolescents with risk behaviours; interventions that will be offered will include school intervention, health promotion (Sharp & Dellis, 2010) which will focus primarily on substance use.
5.1 School Interventions
With regards to school interventions, consellor will have to be trained properly as to how to deal with teenagers who displays inappropriate behaviour around school premises (Sharp & Dellis, 2010). For children who are already using drugs, they will be seen individually by the counsellor and those learners who are exposed to this behaviour but have not experiment with substances they will be seen in groups (Sharp & Dellis, 2010). The number of sessions that will be appropriate for these kinds of problems will be between 12 and 20 sessions for individuals and 8 to 12 sessions for groups. When trying to reduce inappropriate behaviour the first things to look at are risk factors such as peers, school work, family problems and parent child relationship (Sharp & Dellis, 2010). The counsellor will have a sessions with these children and try to find out the main reasons behind their behaviour, what causes them to use substances, are they being influenced by their friends or they doing it because their friends are also using substances. Look at their school performance, are they performing satisfactorily and also look at the kind of relationship these teenagers have with their parents, are the parents involved in their lives and do they support their children (Sharp & Dellis, 2010).
