In “A Christmas Memory” by Truman Capote, Mr. Haha Jones and the mill owner’s wife are minor characters who add depth and complexity to the plot. For example, the cousin in the story takes seven year old Buddy to Mr. Haha Jones’ illegal alcohol business in order to buy whiskey for baking fruitcakes. The fact that the cousin risked Buddy’s safety by bringing him to an illegal establishment that is rumored to be dangerous, brings into question the character’s mental state. The cousin is most likely mentally unstable, because no sane adult would risk a child’s safety just to bake fruitcakes.
