Traditional vs. Modern Society
In order for society to progress it must change constantly, and as a population we must adjust to new customs and ever changing expectations. Since the foundation of society is its people, it is important to analyze the patterns and behaviors of certain groups, in order to identify the type of society that they live in. This is a codependent relationship, which means the actions of people, directly impacts the growth of society. Over the past few decades we have seen a major paradigm shift in how society functions. They were required to act in accordance of their gender role, and could not break out of that mold. It was equally required of their male counterpart to fit into his role as well. In traditional society men had to be masculine, tough, and could not show emotion under any circumstance. They were not aloud to do the household chores, and had to accept the segregation of societal duties. Again, as noted by Campbell and his depiction of the Sarakatsan’s he says: “However sick or feeble his wife or daughter a man will never help her with the intolerable burden of heavy water barrels. These tasks have became diacritical symbols of the two sexes; and to ignore them is to deny that one possesses the essential qualities of one’s sex, manliness or shame.” (Campbell, 111) Proving that the obligation to gender specific duties were more important than the will of an individual. In traditional society it was frowned upon to try to break free of gender roles, they were integrated in society. While, in modern society a person does not have to stick to gender roles, and individual freedom is celebrated.
