In the play, “A Doll House”, by Henrik Isben the role of women in society, during the 1800’s when the play was written, is revealed. During that time women had a sacrificial role in society, they made many sacrifices not only for themselves but for their families. This sacrificial role is revealed through the main character Nora, who sacrifices herself by borrowing money to save her husband Torvald; Mrs. Linde who sacrifices her love with Krogstad to marry a man who doesn’t love her in order to care for her family who depends on her; and the Nurse, Anne-Marie, who sacrifices giving up her child to take care of other people’s families in order for her to survive financially. She gave up her daughter so that she can work for Nora’s family and make a living. Nora doesn’t quite understand why and how Anne-Marie could find in her heart to give up her children, but she lets Nora know that it was best for her and her daughter; “A girl who’s poor and who’s gotten in trouble is glad enough for that” (Ibsen, pg. 874). Although Nora gave up her daughter, they still manage to communicate with each other. Throughout the play the struggle between the power of men and women in society is revealed. Men are seen as superior, leaving women to make sacrifices in order to survive in society. Nora, Mrs. Linde and Anne-Marie portrayed the sacrificial role throughout the play. They’ve all made sacrifices that broke up their families in one way or another. Men manipulated women with their power, making women feel as if they’re in charge. Women were in a subordinate position and kept in the house and left to rely on their husbands. Even though these women were not happy, sacrifices were made in order to survive
