The man from “Hills Like White Elephants” and the grandmother from “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, both use very good points to defend their reasons for wanting to do something and they both end up being the wrong decision. The man uses all the excuses he could think of to make sure Jig thinks that aborting the baby is the right thing to do. “It’s really an awfully simple operation, Jig. It’s really not anything. It’s just to let the air in.” (Hemingway) The man saying that is one of many examples of how the man was telling her anything to get his way. He knew very well how unsafe and illegal abortion was in that time period. He also knew that Jig would be very looked down upon in Spain if anyone found out she got an abortion. In the other story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, the grandmother uses the fact that the Misfit has escaped from jail to get her way. “Here this fellow that calls himself The Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida and you read here what it says he did to these people. Just you read it. I wouldn't take my children in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it. I couldn't answer to my conscience if I did.” (O’Connor). Even though the Misfit did truly escape from jail, he obviously was not on his way to Florida.
