The very first time we see him he is on top of a hill like he runs the world. While he is talking with the grandma he talks to her a lot about god and how he didn't believe. He also says that he doesn’t need God’s help he said “he is doing all right by himself,” that is right the grandmother ask him to pray with her. He also compares himself to Jesus by saying “Jesus shown everything off balance. It was the same case with him as with me”.
Finally Flannery O’Connor talks about the sky. She calls it a cloudless and sunless sky. This is big because the grandma mentioned it when she was talking to the misfit and calls it a beautiful day. Also when the grandma was killed it says that she is looking at the sky smiling. It is evident to me that the sky represents the misfit because they sky is empty just like the inside of him. It is pretty ironic how the misfit is the first one to mention the sky.
Flannery O’Connor is considered by many as one of the best short story writers of the 20th century. Her use of symbolism is a major reason. Her uses of symbolism is so good in the final scene because of all the foreshadowing she use and compare people to things. In my opinion, this is one of the best stories I have ever
