By reading the character of jack in this short story, I think jack was a person who wants some change in his life, but he was so lazy to do so, wants to take some short cuts in his life to make it better living, as it mention in the story that he needed an FM radio in something better than this '58 Buick he drove. It would have crushed velvet interior with electric controls for the L. A.
