The way she is being treated is affecting how she’s thinking,why she should do certain things, and ultimately leads to her suicide. One can only imagine how exhausting it must be for her to constantly feel like she has to please everyone in order to be accepted. This can be seen in lines fifteen and sixteen as “her good nature wore out like a fan belt” (Piercy 624). A fan belt parallels the girl perfectly. The fan belt, represented by the girl, requires an engine, or her motivation in life, in order to work. However, the engine turns out to be abused and overused and depreciates quickly. This is exactly what happened to the girl as she is slowly being dehumanized. It accurately describes how she is feeling at this point and how much she values herself. As much as she was of “good nature” (Piercy 624), her efforts were never enough for anyone. People seem to prefer her as being artificial over her being her genuine self, which contradicts the whole meaning of “nature” or natural. For example, how the girl was dressed in a nightie attire (Piercy 624) in line twenty-two. According to the Merriam-Dictionary, a nightie is “a sexy and often short nightgown”. Knowing what a nightie is and realizing that the girl is wearing that as her final outfit gives off the impression that her privacy is not respected at all and how perverted people can be. Just like a Barbie, people feel like they can dress her any way they want to. It is highly unlikely that if she were to have a say in what she wanted to wear, she would have decided to expose her entire body to the public to be memorialized.
