Overmedication: the act or instance of medicating unnecessarily or excessively. Today’s teenagers and children in America are being overmedicated. Teenagers and children who are overmedicated are ones with Foster parents, have pediatricians or psychiatrists, or have parents who do not understand their problem; and are then given medication such as Adderall, Ritalin, ADHD medication, or Psychotropic drugs.
Teenagers and children who have foster parents are overmedicated with psychotropic drugs such as Xanax, Zoloft, Celexa, Prozac, etc. These drugs are used on the foster children by the foster parents as a way of calming or keeping the child under control ,with some being as young as 3. This explains that most of the psychiatrist and pediatricians are giving most children and teens drugs that include Adderall and Ritalin as a form of treatment for ADHD but has now come around as its falsehood of helping children in school and for those who are teens and/or college student do not use the medications for its intentions and is instead mistreated.
Furthermore, parents are included on the reason that the youth of America is overmedicated because they do not fully understand the child and what their conditions are. Parents assume that because the child may be more “wiggly” than others that they may automatically assume the child has a some sort of disorder or have ADHD. After this is believed by the parent, they then take he/she to a professional who deals with the medical or psychological issues and the parents then questions to the professional whether the child has a disorder or not.
