Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) are an integral component of the American healthcare system as they undertake various roles and responsibilities on the patient care spectrum. The transition of APNs from the theoretical classroom to real-world practice and from one level of expertise to the next comes with significant barriers. This paper follows the journey of one APN, MJ, as she transitions from novice to expert, using questions designed to dig deep into the challenges she encountered while starting out and at various stages of professional development and the strategies implemented to resolve these issues. She still had a few issues with complex cases, but a combination of collaboration and continuous education helped her. As an expert, she now has intuitive clinical reasoning, a wider knowledge base, and highly refined procedural skills. However, she needs to stay up-to-date with developments. She makes decisions for herself and subordinates, mentors fresh nurse practitioners, and is almost becoming head of the department. In conclusion, the interview revealed MJ’s trajectory from a fresh graduate to an expert-level family nurse practitioner. The journey is indicative of how experience and knowledge help one advance in their profession. There is no shortcut but to gain knowledge, experience, and expertise by putting in the work, according to MJ. The journey also aligns with the framework covered in the coursebook.
