This play can be metaphorically called a crucible because of all the action that happened in the story. All the action that happened closely resembled a crucible used in chemistry. The setup for a crucible is a flame, magnesium, and an actual crucible. Characters can be put in these categories of the crucible. The flame can be considered as Abigail Williams, reverend Hale and judge Danforth. The crucible is all of the people convicted of witchcraft because they are imprisoned and left to die.
The flame from a bunsen burner is the energy needed to start to heat up the crucible, just like you need to create a conflict in the story. This is done by Abigail Williams and partially reverend Hale. Hale was the main reason that the witch hunts started. This means that they are doomed and most likely will be killed because of the flame of the burner. These people include John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor, Giles Corey and Rebecca Nurse. This is where the reaction occurs because of the heat. They are all hanged except Giles Corey because he was pressed to death from stones. This happened because of the heat from the burner or the accusers. If these characters had lawyers, and not just appeal to the judge, there would be less false accusations.
The play the crucible and a chemistry crucible are similar in many ways. The play shows the metaphorical way how a crucible works, but it indirectly shows that. The meaning of the story is not to show how they are related but how people were murdered for false accusations.
