As seen in the novel, Bastard Out of Carolina, Bone is being emotionally, physically, and sexually abused by her mother’s second husband, Glen. The abuse is undervalued and almost seems plausible because he claims it is for her own good and protection. At first, Bone does not understand why Glen hurts her.
