Addicts become reliant on their addiction for a sense of connection when they lose touch with their support system because of this isolation. Self-defeating behaviors are often employed by addicts in order to fuel their addictions. Neglecting self-care, engaging in risky behaviors, and repeating choices that perpetuate their dependence on drugs and alcohol can all contribute to this. As a result of engaging in such behaviors, addicts reinforce the addict mindset by creating more negative consequences for themselves. The addict mindset is maintained by cognitive distortions. It is common for addicts to have distorted thinking patterns, such as black-and-white thinking, overgeneralization, or minimization, that reinforce their addictive behaviors. Addicts are unable to see beyond their addictions and make rational decisions that promote healing and recovery when they suffer from cognitive distortions.
