Adrenal Fatigue describes a physical condition whereby the adrenal glands, which sit on top of the kidneys, exhaust themselves of adrenaline. Symptoms of adrenal fatigue include inexplicable tiredness, foggy brain, difficulty getting out of bed in the morning, salt and sugar cravings, decreased sex drive, mild depression, increased PMS, poor memory, inability to handle stress, insomnia, gut issues, food intolerance, general lethargy, decreased zest for life and more. Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome was a term first brought to the world by naturopathic doctor James Wilson, and is a very real syndrome involving a complex group of symptoms which all track back to severe exhaustion and depletion of the adrenal …show more content…
(2015), work at sea involves multiple risk factors for fatigue, which in addition to acute effects (e.g., impaired cognition, accidents) contributes through autonomic, immunologic and metabolic pathways to the development of chronic diseases that are particularly prevalent in seafarers. Moreover, they conclude that taking into account the frequency of seafarer fatigue and the severity of its consequences, one should look into the efficacy of the current legislative framework and the industry's compliance, the manning of the international merchant fleet, and optimized working, living and sleeping conditions at sea. Considering circumstances at sea, e.g. working in shifts and crossing time zones, that cannot be altered, further assessment of the potentials of preventive interventions including fatigue prediction tools and individual fatigue mitigation management systems is recommended. Mentioned by Huanxin (2012), fatigue can be generally defined as a temporary loss of strength and energy resulting from hard physical or mental work. Fatigue can impair the seafarers’ performance at work, diminish their alertness, and affect their problem-solving and decision-making abilities, leading to errors and subsequent maritime casualties. Furthermore, the contributing factors to seafarers’ fatigue were analyzed and classified as follows: crew-specific factors, management factors, ship-specific factors and environmental factors. These essential elements are of …show more content…
Bad weather conditions such as gales and dense fog situations increase the workload of navigation officers and master. Furthermore, seasickness can increase mental and physical fatigue, directly reducing work performance. Factors such as currents and darkness can pose great challenges to seafarers, causing stress and mental fatigue.
(b) Traffic density
Traffic density is an important index to reflect the traffic situation of a specific water area. High traffic density can increase the risk of collision. Watch conditions are closely related would ship traffic. Ship officers must focus on watch keeping and keep alert of the surrounding environment in intensive traffic condition. As a result, the officers are in a state of tension and high stress, which can cause mental fatigue.
