How have minority groups contributed to the shaping of American culture? In a culture that prides itself on recognizing diversity and fostering inclusion, American society has overlooked the importance of minority groups in the formation of American culture. Since our beginnings, we have completely overshadowed the achievements and rich history of our original inhabitants, for example, and have continued to let such voices be unheard. However, these minority groups’s impact on American culture is undeniable and instrumental to our society. The National Museum of American History claims that “African-American musical traditions mixed with others and gradually jazz emerged from a blend of ragtime, marches, blues, and other kinds of music. The evolution of jazz was led by a series of brilliant musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, and Miles Davis.” (NMAH 3). Jazz music is a key element of American culture and is still a prevalent genre of music today. Jazz’s origins in African American history have helped to establish African-Americans as pioneers in this genre and have characterized the cultural significance of jazz music and its way of breaking down racial barriers. Jazz was born in irreverence and became a way for African Americans to vocalize their struggles with racism, unequal opportunities, and unpopular perspectives in America. Furthermore, the promotion of jazz music has helped to foster a sense of cultural identity and pride among African Americans and has contributed to their presence in American culture.
