People get prejudice from their parents and peer groups. Racism is taught and learned in these families and peer groups we are not born with it. Racism is one of the largest social issues of the modern world. People make judgments about others based off what they see and often skin color is the first thing. Some stereotypes that are applied to my African American ethnic group by outsiders would be how black men are considered to be thugs, criminals, drug dealers, or pimps etc. For example, in movies, viewers are always being shown black actors or actresses being portrayed as the criminal or the enemy. Often these films and television shows provide little social context for why more black people than others are likely to end up in the criminal justice system. The issue of racial equality is a social barrier that the Americans are yet to overcome.
Another instance would be how in schools students are exposed to bullying, racial slurs, and even more. Fortunately, I have not been exposed to these heinous and cruel situations personally, but I have been a bystander to such. Students calling others these harmful and cruel things which; consequently, leads to other students thinking it is okay or “funny” and thus doing it to make their friends laugh or make themselves feel cool or big. Whether it be getting a promotion or getting a raise it seems black people are always last on these lists. Even in a public workplace black people are treated as if we’re not good enough to receive a promotion or employee of the month etc. To put another way, whether you notice or not or whether you are included in these people who judge others off stereotypes, racism is real and it is still going on to this day.
