Africans lived in urban communities and residential areas. Some were rich and some were poor, and there was always a time where they were at peace with each other and others when they were at war with one another. But one thing that west africans needed was goods such as cloth, iron, and coope. They could make these things themselves, but it wouldn't be as strong . So what people like the portuguese and europeans did at first was say they would give them africans guns for gold, but the portuguese pope said no because it was making them powerful. So what the europeans started doing was giving goods in exchange for slaves which africans had a lot of indentured slaves. Boats would leave Western Europe for Africa stacked with merchandise which was to be traded for slaves.
