During World War I the black Africans had fought in in the armies of the French and the British. The Africans had the hopes of being independent after the war as a reward. There was a huge disappointment because of the peace settlement that came after World War I. The Germans that had the African colonies were stripped of them, but later on France and Great Britain were awarded with them in order to be given as the approval for the League of Nations.

In 1921, in the country of Kenya, a man named Harry Thuku created an organization called the Young Kikuyu Association that had objected the high taxes that the British rulers had imposed.
There was also another disruption that occurred, one that was going against the rule of the Italians in Libya that happened in the 1920s. Guerrilla warfare was used against Italians and they had defeated them many times. By the times of the 1930s, a huge number of African leaders weren’t calling for reform, but for independence.
The demands for independence came from the latest group of African leaders. The leaders of the African nations as well as the African movements had also come. People like Jomo Kenyatta had used his book to argue the fact that the British was destroying the culture of the Africans. Leopold Senghor created a movement for independence in Senegal, while Nnamdi Azikiwe had pushed the idea of nonviolence in order to gain some independence. (Spielvogel 788)
