If a person has experienced the pain of losing someone or something important to them, then that person knows what it is like to feel the sting of grief. Upon researching this topic, I have discovered that grief has been a long-studied issue that is still evolving. While the study of grief continues, it is important to keep in mind that not everyone grieves the same way. Grief is universal and is experienced by a plethora of people across many cultures. Experiencing grief comes with a variety of emotions that may occur in phases. Situations such as a loved one passing, a relationship ending or losing a job are examples. There are other circumstances that can lead to grief like chronic illness or a move to a new home. Along with these circumstances follows different time periods for grieving. It can be based on a persons age, personality, or their support system. A person might not grieve as long over the end of a relationship versus a sudden death of a loved one. Time is a vital feature in the healing process. A person must understand that they need to give themselves ample time to filter through the process. They must be hopeful that one day happiness will return and they will be able to continue on with their life. In order to avoid isolation, it may help for a person to talk with their friends and family about the situation. Spending time with others and gaining emotional support can alleviate some of the stress caused by grief. Maintaining one’s previous hobbies and activities can also provide a gateway for joy. Eating well and getting an adequate amount of rest is a great way for one to cultivate energy. Joining a social support group allows a person to explore their feelings and connect with others who are experiencing the same thing. People experience loss everyday and scientists are studying their methods of coping to establish new insights on grief. One of the most influential researchers on grief, Sidney Zisook, has promoted his own four components of grief. Meek (2012, Conclusion section, para. 8) suggests that “It is very likely that 10 years from now we will have an even better sense of how grief works, and also what works to help people move through it in healthy ways.”
