Living through a war comes with many complexities, such as the fear of wondering if your loved ones will make it to see you the next day, or if you may not find anything to eat for dinner that night. All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr represents many of these scenarios, where characters will feel doubtful or weak, but still manage to use their own personal strengths to overcome their challenges. Resilience plays a large role in the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner. They both have different ways to approach and surpass their personal challenges, Werner uses his love for science and Marie-Laure uses motivational words said by her father. In the scene with Werner where Volkheimer brings in a cuffed prisoner that was found trying to escape and steal milk, Werner begins to think about how he is writing letters to Jutta, lying saying that everything is going just fine, but in reality everything is in shambles. …show more content…
While she is on the third floor, the trip wire jerks which makes the bell ring which tells her that someone is entering the house, but nonetheless she continues downstairs back to the cellar. The resilience shown between these two scenes shows how both Marie-Laure and Werner were filled with a heavy emotion of either guilt or fear, but were still able to overcome those emotions using their strengths. Missing home is a common theme throughout the story, especially with Werner and Marie-Laure. Characters experience the tense emotion of missing not so much a literal home, but where they came from and who has been there with them since day
