The opening lyrics, “Tell the one above he’s a criminal / For taking and giving life like marble candy” could play while An-Mei is giving up on finding Bing. “And it made me angry-so blindingly angry- that everything had failed us” (tan, 130) as expressed by Rose further affirms the connection between the lyrics and the scene. She then poured her sweetened tea and blue sapphire ring into the sea in hopes of distracting the Coiling Dragon from Bing. The lyrics “Everything collapses around me / Overwhelms and astounds me / A terrible truth” can be played whenever Rose or An-Mei confuse a person or thing for Bing. Not being able to find Bing “overwhelmed and astounded” both An -Mei and Rose. An-Mei was surprised because even after she applied her faith and poured goods out to the sea and prayed, she was still unable to locate Bing. The lyrics that exude the most emotion and intensity are “When you leave this life, the world will be a darker place for / All who remain” and they can be played while Rose and An-Mei are fishing for Bing. “After a dozen or so times, it was sucked into the dark recess, and when it came out, it was torn and lifeless” (Tan, 130). This provides a literal interpretation of the lyrics which is that the fishing rod was sucked into the darkness which, at the same time, can represent how An-Mei and Rose are feeling. After Bing left the world, their world will be darker. “The light you gave the human race will go away / I see you everything that I close my eyes” can be
