American River: Tributaries by Mallory M. O'Connor is book one of the American River Trilogy. I enjoyed this book. The author tells the stories of three California families beginning with first generation immigrant ancestors from Japan, Mexico, and Ireland. We learn how they navigate historical events and set-backs as they work to establish themselves in a new country and build a new life for themselves and their descendants. We follow the families through time and across great distances as they strive to fulfill their dreams and the dreams of their children.

O'Connor also examines the difficulties families and individuals face during the painful process of cultural change and acceptance. There is a constant push/pull between individual happiness
